The current popularity of jadite and the resulting high prices for "rare and unusual" items has spawned a large industry of reproduction* and fantasy* items. By listing them as "Fire-King" or as "Rare"on eBay and other sites, unscrupulous dealers carefully avoid outright lying but may, nevertheless, imply that these items are "antique" or vintage. We have gathered together in one place some information to help make you a smarter shopper.

Please check the background, the reputation, and the feedback of any dealer before investing in items such as these. Know what you are getting into.

Reproduction jadite Measuring Cup Set a reproduction of Jeannette's 1930's vintage four piece measuring cup set. Sold online at http://www2.gooseberrypatch.com/gooseberry/products.nsf/v.weball/k536

"FINE RIB" BALL PITCHER Reproduction.* New. A copy of the Hazel-Atlas pitcher.

REAMER PITCHER Fantasy Item.* New. Reproductions of a Jeannette reamer top and a US GLass pitcher wedded to make an item never produced by either of those companies.

"SWIRL" BATTER BOWL Fantasy Item.* New. Never produced by Anchor-Hocking. Currently being sold in Cracker Barrel Restaurants.

MELON BALL PITCHER Reproduction* of the Fire-King pitcher. Made in China. Not to be confused with the Swirl pitcher commonly found in Royal Ruby and produced in crystal today.

CAKE STAND. Made by the Fenton Glass Company for Martha Stewart. Com (See below)

"CANDLEWICK" SPOON. A reproduction* of the Imperial Glass Company's longest running pattern. Look for other jadite Candlewick including a covered butter dish with or without a portrait of Shirley Temple. ALL jadite Candlewick is NEW.

CHINESE "RESTAURANT WARE" Now appearing in Import Shops, Department Store, Flea Markets, and even "Antique" Malls. Originally marked with an easily-removable clear plastic decal that reads "At Home International MADE IN CHINA" and a bar code. Pieces include dinner plates, soup and cereal bowls,a covered bowl, salt and pepper shakers, and a batter bowl.

COVERED ANIMAL DISHES. Reproductions of pieces made originally in white, blue, and other opaque colors by Westmoreland and others. Originals show greater detail.

"CRISS CROSS" CANISTER SET. Fantasy Item*. Made to resemble "Criss Cross" items made by the Hazel-Atlas Glass Company. Not a reproduction of any actual item made by Hazel Atlas or any other company. NOTE: Hazel-Atlas never made jadite.

DRIPPINGS JAR. A Fantasy Item*. Sometimes marked "BUTTER". Not modeled after any vintage piece. All such jars are NEW.

DRY MEASURE. Reproduction* based on old Pattern Glass (Pre-Depression Era) by Westmoreland and other glass companies. Originals made in crystal only. Often with advertising.

"ENGLISH HOBNAIL" Open salt. Reproduction* of the Westmoreland Glass Company's Line 555 individual salt dish. Originals made in crystal, pink, amber, and transparent green. Not jadite.

HEART DISH. Fantasy Item* -- not a reproduction of any vintage item.

MORTAR and PESTAL. Found un-marked or marked. A fantasy item* -- not a reproduction of any vintage Depression Era pattern. Beware also of vintage custard cups fitted with cocktail muddlers and presented as mortar and pestals. Both pieces may be old, but their pairing is a fantasy.

ORANGE REAMER Reproduction* of a Depression-Era item made by the Jeannette Glass Company.

PICKLE CASTOR. Made to resemble Early American Pattern Glass (EAPG) pickle casters made by a variety of companies.

ROLLING PIN. One of several styles. About 14" long. Often has air bubbles and mold lines. Also made in pink, ruby, cobalt blue, and milk white.

SALT and PEPPER SHAKERS. Sometimes marked vertically SALT and PEPPER. A fantasy item* -- not a reproduction of any vintage Depression Era pattern.

SALT and PEPPER SHAKERS in HOLDER. Sometimes marked vertically SALT and PEPPER. A fantasy item* -- not a reproduction of any vintage Depression Era pattern.

SPICE SHAKERS. Range size. Marked "Paprika" (shown here), "Powdered Sugar", "Oregano" "Thyme", and others. Sometimes shown with a silhouette of Shirley Temple. Fantasy Item*-- not a reproduction of any vintage item.

SUGAR SHAKER. Made to resemble vintage sugar shakers by a number of different glass companies. Marked or un-marked.

SYRUP PITCHER. Made from the same mold as the Spice Shakers. Fitted with a syrup top and marked "Syrup." Fantasy Item* -- not a reproduction of any vintage item.

WATER SET. Reproduction* of an early Westmoreland pattern.

CAVEAT EMPTOR:
December 1, 2000: Anchor-Hocking's production of its new Jade-ite Fire-King 2000 line of restaurant ware has been temporarily halted. According to the company, the new line "hasn't met quality standards and can't be delivered at this time". Collectors, dealers, and other manufacturers are no doubt watching with some trepidation as the new restaurant ware will be marked with only a paper label that can easily be removed.

(Jonathan Plotzker (JonathanP@RestorationHardware.com) Director of Catalogue & Web Operations for Restoration Hardware, the sole distributor for the new line, says that..."The stamp on the bottom reads "Fire King 2000," so there's no chance of someone trying to pass this off as originals."
